Living in St. Augustine: A Local’s Perspective

St. Augustine, Florida is known as the oldest city in the United States, founded in 1565 — but living here is about much more than history.

It’s a place where coastal views, historic streets, and a laid-back lifestyle all come together in a way that’s genuinely hard to find anywhere else in Florida. Growing up in South Florida, I’ve been able to see the difference firsthand.

My wife Lakin and I live here with our dog Buddy, and like a lot of locals, we spend most of our time bouncing between the beach, downtown, and some of our favorite local spots around town.

What Makes St. Augustine Different

St. Augustine has a much smaller, more relaxed feel than most Florida cities.

The population in the city itself is only around 15,000, so even though millions of visitors come through each year, it still feels like a close-knit coastal town.

You’ll quickly notice things like:

  • historic streets and architecture
  • independent restaurants and local shops
  • quiet neighborhoods near the water
  • beautiful beaches just minutes away

The Weather in St. Augustine

One of the reasons people love living here is the weather. Being right on the Atlantic keeps the climate mild for most of the year.

Winter: In the 60s and 70s — perfect for walking downtown or enjoying outdoor restaurants.
Spring: The best time of year, with temps in the 70s and low 80s with plenty of sunshine.
Summer: Warm and sunny in the 80s and 90s, ideal for beach days and time on the water.
Fall: Cooling back into the 70s and 80s, with quieter beaches and a relaxed feel around town.

It’s a climate that makes St. Augustine easy to enjoy year-round.

Everyday Life Here

One of the best parts of living in St. Augustine is how simple daily life can be.

A typical day might mean:

  • grabbing coffee downtown
  • heading out to the beach in the afternoon
  • walking along the bayfront at sunset
  • meeting friends for seafood or live music in the historic district

It’s relaxed without feeling boring, and there’s always something going on if you want it.

Why So Many People Are Moving Here

Over the last few years, more people have started discovering St. Augustine as a place to live, not just visit.

Some are relocating for the lifestyle.
Others are looking for a second home near the beach.
And some are drawn to the area’s strong vacation rental market.

Because of that mix, the real estate market here is unique and constantly evolving.
